VISTA – A San Marcos mother of four who caused a crash on state Route 78 that killed three people, including her fiance, is scheduled to be sentenced today at the courthouse in Vista.

Debbie Sumi, 36, was convicted in October of three counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. She faces up to 14 years in prison when she is sentenced by Judge Runston Maino.

Deputy District Attorney Jodi Breton told a jury that Sumi was drunk behind the wheel when her car crashed on westbound state Route 78 near Sycamore Avenue just before midnight on Aug. 12, 2010.

Sumi’s attorney maintained the defendant’s fiance was the one driving the couple’s 1994 Jeep Cherokee when it drifted off the highway and into the back of a 2008 Nissan Altima that had pulled onto the shoulder of the road.

Sumi was thrown from her car, presumably through the driver’s side window, according to the CHP. Her fiance, 34-year-old Larry Alvarez, was partially ejected and died at the scene, Two women standing next to the Altima, Susana Orozco of Escondido and Erica Oliva of Fallbrook, both 23, were also killed.

Following the crash, Sumi’s blood-alcohol level was measured at .27 and .28 percent, Breton said.

Yeah right. This chick isn’t going to do any time. The law doesn’t give a rat’s behind that she killed 3 people because she “has a disease”, no this is not a disease people-this is a drinker. There is no excuse, and no “disease” that can be used as an excuse for her behavior. She was way over the legal limit when they breathalized her. God only knows how much higher her BAC was at the time of the accident. Drunk drivers should stay in prison for a long time. They always get a slap on the wrist or probation for DUIS. And guess what? They almost always get out and do it again within a year. And “diseases” like being a stupid, careless, drinker are not acceptable or excusable. Period. The “good drunks” are the ones who KNOW they shouldn’t be driving, and WALK HOME FROM THE BAR! And what happens in this stupid town when dumb cops see a couple of people walking home from the bar???? They arrest them for being “drunk in public”. I would rather have a “drunk in public individual”, than a drunk driver, and a bunch of dead innocent people!! Wake up cops!! Start arresting more drunk drivers rather than arresting people who are responsible enough to walk home from a bar!

Your absolutely right shewont…. (maybe a bit of time) but the thing that hit me, which we will see, are those that still ignore the fact of the drugs that are "the most deadly" and "legal" (due to politicians/ lobbyist profiting off them) ie… alcohol, tabacco, and pharmaceuticals, yet will complain when the marijuana subject is brought up….

First I have never used any recreational drug, what so ever, and yes, I do consume the gateway, dangerous drug of alcohol, on occassions. But I bet some of the family members of the dead victims "wish" this woman was high on pot, instead of the deadly and dangerous drugs of lobbyist supporting and profiting alcohol.

If she had been, she would have probably fell asleep somewhere and not driven to kill those innocent people.Heck, from governmental research, she may have just gained a few pounds through what they call "munchies".

So keep supporting: the fake for lobbyist profit (drug wars on marijuana); the legalization of the most dangerous, harmful, and killer drugs we have, alcohol, tabacco, and ESPECIALLY, PHARMACEUTICALS. That always makes the world a safer place….. Yeah Right.

Keep all the victims and even Debbie in your prayers. Compassion for all, since we all could one day, face similar circumstances ESPECIALLY AGAIN, if we use alcohol, tabacco, or pharaceuticals. And God forbid, if that day does come for any of us, we too would like to be shown compassion… Hate the sin, not the sinner…
